Huizhou No.1 Middle School was founded in 1929. After changing its name several times, in 1965 it began officially named as Huizhou No.1 Middle School. In 1978 it was identified as a key provincial middle school; In 1993 classified into the first grade provincial school; In 1998 designated as a pilot school for audio-visual education program; In 2002 classified into the traditional sports items (athletics) school and the pilot school for modern education technology in Guangdong Province. At present, the school is declaring the national model high school in Guangdong province.
   To create greater brand quality education within the region and to establish one of the 1000 National Model High Schools, the school successfully absorbed the social capital 150 million-yuan to build a new school district. On September1, 2004, the new school district was built and put into use. Therefore, at present, the school is divided into the South Lake school district (secondary school department) and the new school district in Jinshan Lake (high school department).The South Lake school district, covering over 60,000 square metres, is tree-shaded with a famous old banyan and winding paths, whose garden is a truly advanced green courtyard-style unit. The school has built a geographic park, a biological park and the campus network, equipped with computer rooms, chemical laboratories, biological laboratories, biological specimens rooms, multimedia classrooms, phonetics classrooms and other hardware facilities, The new campus covers an area of about 300 acres, with a total construction area of 76,000 square metres. The campus is spacious, quiet and elegant, with the green rate of 80%. The school is divided into teaching areas, sports areas and living quarters. In order to build a modern, digital, ecological-typed and Human-style campus, the school is fully equipped with the modern educational facilities, such as teaching and laboratory buildings, information building, canteens, dormitories, offices, library, art building, academic hall, sports stadiums, swimming pools, standard plastics playground, geographic park, biological park, the observatory, 1000 trillion trunk campus network and so on. 
    Now the school has a total of 331 teaching and administrative staff, including one special-grade teacher, 89 senior teachers and 89 level teachers. Among the teaching faculty, there are eight teachers who are graduates, nine graduating from the graduate classes, four participating in the provincial EFA training for “Fostering Talents Project” and national and provincial backbone teacher training. Up till now seven teachers have been awarded national outstanding teachers; more than ten rated provincial and municipal outstanding teachers and model workers; five rated as “New Teaching Stars in South China”. The entire teaching and administrative staff are indulged in the teaching work and keep forging ahead. Their selfless devotion provides assurances for the development and progress of school education. At present, the school has set up 63 senior classes with over 3,600 students and junior classes with more than 1,600 students.
In accordance with the school tradition “Tampering oneself, Initiative learning and Innovation”, the school vigorously promote quality education, teaching and educating people, serving and cultivating people, in order to form the school spirit “ to respect teachers and love students; to unite and advance”, the teaching spirit “Good teaching, Proper guidance, Truth-seeking and Asking for novelty”, and the learning spirit “Diligent, Learned, Strict and Flexible”. Adhering to the school guidelines of “Moral leadership, Teaching-oriented, Comprehensive development and Acquired ability”, the school has established on the expansion and development of high quality education and proposed “to provide high quality educational services, cultivate excellent students to the best university” to the school philosophy.
    Since 1993, the school has scored the first place three times in college entrance examination, the second place once in liberal arts. Nine students have acquired the NEMT division champions. Over 80 have scored over 800points in total score and more than 200 have scored 800 points in divisions. The rate of being admitted to colleges and universities remains more than 98%. Every year, more than 100 got the provincial prizes or above in the discipline competitions. In 2004, nine students got the provincial first prizes in the Olympics Competitions of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and computer.
    The school has established four education scholarship fund, including “Li yuanjing Scholarship”, “The scholarship for outstanding behavior by Hongkong Rising Sun Group”, “Teaching scholarship by the Ocean Group” and “Chen zhengyi teaching grants in aid of poor students and teachers”. The purpose of these four scholarships is to award those excellent diligent teachers and students and help poor students to complete their studies.
   The school has been awarded the national advanced unit for the Young Pioneer reading activities, the provincial advanced middle school for practice education activities, the provincial advanced ethics group, the provincial outstanding Youth League Union, the provincial beautiful campus, the provincial green campus, and ten-civilization school in Huizhou City. For several years, the school has received the special awards for the results and the progress of the college entrance examination. In 2003, the school was rated as the civilized unit and home for advanced staff in Guangdong Province. In 2004, the school was honored as the exemplary collective of Huizhou City and home for model staff in Guangdong province.
